Exploring ways of teaching mathematics: a report from a workshop

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the use of Mathematical Crosswords containing operations with integers and decimals numbers. We bring to discussion the pedagogical proposal experienced by first grade students at a public high school with a mathematical game based on crosswords, where students solve the questions and complete the scheme by crossing the numbers. By taking the game to the classroom, our objective was to arouse students' interest, develop logical reasoning, review elementary school content and identify the level of learning in operations with integers and decimals numbers. It was possible to notice a greater engagement of students in the class dynamics, a strong interaction of students with a different teaching method and the learning that was made possible through this dynamic, with a noticeable development in mathematical knowledge. However, other observations emerged from practice: the heterogeneity of classes and the difference between classes, combined with the large number of students in the classroom, difficult the teaching work. Furthermore, the high workload in the classroom is harmful to the innovative ideas of Mathematics teachers.
