Abstract

In this article, I provide a reading of Schiller’s Mary Stuart based in the notion of freedom inherent to his thought. Such notion, although rooted in Kantian ideals, is original in relation to that of the philosopher, also Schiller’s predecessor. Schiller argues that the sublime, the aesthetic effect of a tragedy, has the power of influencing the ethical dimension of human life by making us free. Stuart, the protagonist of the play, is the representation of this Schillerian notion of freedom.
