THE RETT SYNDROME AND THE IMPLICATIONS OF COVID-19: A NARRATIVE SYNTHESIS

Abstract

Introduction: The Rett syndrome is a psychomotor disorder, caused by a genetic mutation of the gene Mecp-2, located on X Chromosomes, codifying its proteins denominated as a rare disease, particularly more prevalent in girls. The syndrome is divided in four phases, increasing the severity of the symptoms throughout the children’s development in a predictable way. These implications affect directly their health condition and quality of life. Objectives: To perform narrative syntheses of the literature about the implications of COVID-19 in Rett syndrome, pointing considerations out how COVID-19 implications can interfere in functionality and quality of life of this population. Methods: The results were divided in two topics: a) The COVID-19 outbreak and the implications on children with Rett syndrome; and b) Some recommendations for children with Rett syndrome during the pandemic scenario. Results: The narrative synthesis of this review indicates that children with Rett syndrome are vulnerable group and at great risk to have major complications, since they get infected for the disease. Conclusion: In addition, social isolation due to restrictions imposed by COVID-19 pandemic might interfere in their functionality and quality of life, substantially.
