A MEGAFAUNA PLEISTOCÊNICA NO BAIXO SÃO FRANCISCO ALAGOANO

No interior do nordeste do Brasil, tem sido documentada uma faunapleistocênica de mamíferos de grande porte já extintos, conhecidos como
mamíferos da megafauna, principalmente em depósitos de tanques, que são
depressões no embasamento cristalino do pré-cambriano, as quais formavam
antigas áreas sazonalmente alagadas. Os fósseis pleistocênicos são
encontrados com frequência em tanques, lagoas e cacimbas esculpidas em
rocha do embasamento cristalino, na maioria das vezes, quando estes locais
são escavados para permitir uma maior e melhor capacidade de
armazenamento hídrico, já que a seca é um fenômeno constante na região
semiárida. Em Alagoas, as pesquisas realizadas pela equipe de paleontólogos
do Museu de História Natural da Universidade Federal de Alagoas buscam
contar a história desses megamamíferos no solo alagoano. Até o presente
foram identificados 15 táxons de mamíferos pleistocênicos em Alagoas:
Eremotherium laurillardi Lund, 1842; Catonyx cuvieri Lund, 1839; Ocnotherium
giganteum Lund, 1839; Notiomastodon platensis Ameghino, 1888; Palaeolama
major Liais, 1872; Xenorhinotherium baihensis Cartelle & Lessa, 1988; Equus
(Amerhippus) neogaeus Lund, 1840; Ozotocerus bezoarticus Linnaeus, 1758;
Toxodon platensis Owen, 1840; Panochthus greslebini Castellanos, 1941;
Glyptotherium Osborn, 1903; Pampatherium humboldti Lund, 1839; Holmesina
paulacoutoi Cartelle & Bohórquez, 1985; Glyptodon clavipes Owen, 1838;
Smilodon populator Lund, 1842.
