RATIONAL BINGO: A PLAYFUL APPROACH IN TEACHING DIFFERENT REPRESENTATIONS OF RATIONAL NUMBERS

Abstract

This work aims to report an application, as a participant in the Pedagogical Residency Program (PRP) at UFPE, of the educational game “Rational Bingo” as a strategy for teaching rational numbers in an 8th year class at a public school. teaching. The motivation for this approach arose from the perception that it was necessary to diversify the strategies for teaching rational numbers, since students were not motivated by the approaches adopted until then. In this sense, the Rational Bingo game was chosen for its ability to involve different representations of this numerical set, such as: fractional numbers, decimal numbers, percentage rates and natural and pictorial language, allowing a more playful and comprehensive approach to the content. During implementation in the classroom, over the course of 120 minutes, students were divided into pairs and carried out activities that involved discussions about the content and written productions. This not only encouraged critical thinking but also promoted collaboration among students. After application, we found that using this game as a pedagogical tool proved to be advantageous for promoting a more dynamic approach, as, through it, students were able to explore different representations of rational numbers and developed reasoning skills, providing valuable insights to improve future implementations. In short, this work highlights how the incorporation of educational games can benefit the teaching of mathematical content, providing student engagement and, therefore, guidance for lesson redesign.
