As águas fenícias: um estado da arte sobre o uso cultual e astronômico do cothon de Motya

Historicamente interpretada como um elemento-chave da infraestrutura naval e comercial da cidade, a bacia monumental de Motya, conhecida como 'kothon', foi durante muito tempo compreendida como um porto interior artificial, por analogia ao porto militar de Cartago (~220 km de distância). Com o suporte de campanhas arqueológicas sistemáticas conduzidas desde 2002 pela Universidade de Roma “La Sapienza”, atualmente é possível desafiar essa visão tradicional. O conjunto de evidências estabelece que a bacia não era um porto, mas sim um lago sagrado de água doce no coração de um santuário monumental (temenos). A partir dessa nova reinterpretação revelou-se um sofisticado complexo religioso, dedicado às divindades Baal e Astarte, que também funcionava como um observatório astronômico. O alinhamento preciso do lago, dos templos e das estelas com eventos celestes — como os solstícios e o nascer de constelações — demonstra uma profunda integração entre arquitetura, cosmologia e a veneração cúltica do mundo natural. O objetivo desse artigo é, tão somente, apresentar o estado da arte dessa importante descoberta e a sua interpretação visando uma melhor compreensão da religiosidade fenício-púnica, por meio da Arqueologia.
